PE and Sports Grant

PE and Sports Grant 2017-18

Twiss Green Community Primary School

Sports Premium Funding

In April 2013, the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education (PE) and sport. This funding is used to improve the quality and breadth of PE.  Schools are free to determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.  It will also be used to provide additional swimming provision targeted at pupils not able to meet the swimming requirements of the national curriculum.

Twiss Green’s allocation this academic year is £17,830.  £5780 has been used to employ a specialist PE coach who works in school each week alongside class teachers in Years 1-6, the aim being to increase their subject knowledge and confidence in PE. Simon Dow of Active Soccer also delivers a before school multi-skills club for children in Key Stage 1 and football coaching after school for children in Years 4-6.  In addition he offers sports coaching during the holidays and will be using the school site for this later in the school year.

£1700 has been used to buy into a Service Level Agreement provided by the Local Authority. LiveWire, Warrington School Sport Partnership and The Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation work together to provide schools with high quality support and a menu of opportunities, including:

Teaching and learning support

Pupil achievement and progress

Staff training and support

Assessment and planning

Health and well being

Safe practice in PE and sport

Warrington Wolves rugby league coaching

It provides targeted training for school staff.  In recent years all staff have had access to Real PE training.  The school’s PE Subject Leader is new to the post and will be given the opportunity to access appropriate training and support. One of our *HLTAs and another teacher have taken responsibility for the implementation of Real PE in Key Stage 1 and Years 3 and 4 - this has had a significant impact on the children’s skill levels.  In Years 5 and 6 Real PE is delivered by the class teachers.

*This member of staff is now a NQT and is continuing to implement Real PE as part of her role when teaching Year 1 and Year 2.

PE and Sports Grant funding will also be used to fund the following:

Real PE training and resources (for teachers new to year group or post)

Update training and resources (ongoing)

Purchase of sports equipment (ongoing)

Transportation and staff cover to School Games competitions and other sporting events

Introduce new sports and activities to encourage more pupils to take up sport (in particular Yoga at a cost of approximately £4000 per annum)

Compete in sporting competitions organised by other schools (eg cross country)

A number of teaching staff at Twiss Green take a keen interest in sport and as a result run the following after school clubs:

Funding will be used to purchase new football kit and to pay for transport to a number of tournaments and competitions.  It will also be used to pay for supply cover so that class teachers are able to take small groups of children to other tournaments, including tennis, rugby league and athletics.

Weekly cricket coaching sessions are available during the summer term for children in Key Stage 2 provided by the Cheshire Cricket Board.  In addition the children in Year 3 and Year 4 will receive coaching this year in rugby league from Warrington Wolves coaches.

Each year at Twiss Green a whole school Sports Week is organised by the PE Subject Leader.  Coaches in a range of sports come into school to work with the children.  This summer the sports on offer will include:

Rugby League

Judo (one of our staff is a Judo coach and has represented her country at international level)

The ‘Daily Mile’ is undertaken by all children in KS2 – it takes place at least three times per week.

Children in Reception are involved in a daily ‘Wake Up and Shake Up’ activity which is planned and delivered by their class teacher (who has a degree in dance).  They are joined two or three times a week by children in Year 1 and Year 2.This is enabling all our children to be engaged in extra physical activity and to reflect on the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle.

The budget will be reviewed on a regular basis and adjustments will be made according to the needs of the pupils and staff of Twiss Green Community Primary School
